The 1996 Chevy Impala SS was a bright spot of the 1990s -- and a star in the General Motors lineup. Today I'm reviewing the '96 Impala SS, and I'm going to show you all around the Impala SS. Then I'm going to drive the Chevy Impala SS and explain what it's like on the road.

I keep thinking Mercury Marauder. Not as cool, not as fast - but competitors.

One of my top 2 dream cars (the other being a Monte Carlo 84-88). I can actually afford one now but don't want the trouble of trying to keep it secure as cats will try you in these where I'm from (Central MS) and where I now live in Memphis.

What I like most about this car is the fact that it has the attitude and design philosophy of something from the 70s with the huge overhangs, massive V8, the old school thinking, etc, but is very much a 90s car. It's not even like they tried any 'retro' styling, it's a bonafide 90s car with the soul of something from 2 decides prior.

How the hell does a 90's 4 door sedan (w 320ft lb torque) that jerked his head back upon acceleration get a 1/10..?

You need to look at the torque number not hp. they tune the engine for torque and more down low than the other LT ones. it had 330 lb feet down low with only $2,400 rpm. The saying goes something like "horsepower is great for advertising torque is what moves cars". all they did to suspension was basically take a police suspension lower it a little and put different shocks on it. that may be why you think rides rough and it has much lower profile tires then the police car
i've seen one of them irl 😌

Doug; we ordered our '95' SS from the factory and it came with 2 factory provided 3 button remotes with a large chevy chevron molded into the body of the remote below the buttons. The factory remotes P/N10239647 provided with our SS do not have any beep function associated with locking or unlocking the doors or the trunk..

The difference between the 96 Impala style and those that came later makes me think GM hated making money so they identified everything sexy on the car and scrapped it.

Had a '96 model. At the time I owned too many cars and something had to go, so it was a choice between it and a Explorer, and the SS lost, and it was sold. During it's time with me it even managed to win a few show awards. The guy I sold it to had to bring a truck over to pick up all the extra 9C1 performance parts I had collected and a few other performance upgrade parts. My decision was based on the fact that the Explorer was something I could haul things in. But still after all these years I still miss that car....no it was not a car, it was a Automobile.

Couple of fun facts: The 17 inch wheels were unique to the Impala because they had a 5 inch bolt pattern while other GM rwd platforms used 4.5. They also had rather shallow backspacing, so Camaro or Corvette wheels wouldn't fit. This was the last sedan and station wagon platform from GM to use full body-on-frame construction.

5.7L V8 with 260 HP. Man, it sure took America ALL of the time to figure out cars. seriously, that is just pathetic. I mean, the car is gorgeous, but that engine....or the 5l V8 in the foxbody Mustang that had 150 hp... it;s just embarrassing
