The Ford Excursion is a massive SUV that's developed a cult following. Today I'm reviewing the Ford Excursion, and I'll show you all the quirks and features of this behemoth. I'll also review the Ford Excursion driving experience, and show you what it's like on the road -- and why so many people love the Ford Excursion.

My parents had the 2002 V-10 4x4 great truck, I’ve since joined the army and they’ve sold it in the past 2 years... I will always love the excursion

Remember going on a test drive for one of these back in 1999, ended up getting a Navigator. Even have that same VCR to this day.

I have to disagree with him on it not being an attractive vehicle. It looked like an SUV. The new suv's are horribly ugly. To me, everyone has their own opinion. But mine is, all the newer suv's look like crossovers.

6:45 It also takes up most of the visibility on the rear passenger side window, so the blind spot on that side would be kind of hard to see.

I love those old Owners Manuals, they actually sounded like they were written by a human. They told you all the same stuff that the modern ones do, but they didn't sound nearly as robotic and corporate. A great example are the Manuals written by AMC in the '70s. They actually encouraged you to maintain the car yourself, instead of just taking it to the shop, for example telling you how to properly store the car for long periods of time (draining the tank or telling you to pour oil down the carb, yes they actually said that!). The entire Manuals were written in a down to earth tone, as if you were talking to a friend not a corporation. Sadly these things faded out in the late 90's.

Doug, in case you wondered, a similar issue happened in the 90s up till the 00s where a company in Thailand called Thairung who would actually manufacture SUV versions of the Isuzu Pickup Truck, the SUV version has already been made officially by Isuzu as the Rodeo and in other markets as the Isuzu MU, but the Thairung SUVs (called the Grand Adventure and the Tripper) basically also have full size doors form the pickup trucks as seen with the Ford Excursion.

This actually has a surprisingly tight turning radius. I think much tighter than the Suburban.

When I was growing up my friend's dad had one of these, he also had a Viper, an NSX and an S series for the wife + I think 1 other practical car. He only had 2 kids, but he'd drive the Excursion and just give everyone rides home from wherever his kids were hanging out at

I had a 1998 Mazda MPV sport edition in white and it's pretty comparable to this. I loved that car so much. It's a real shame my sister drove it one time not checking the guages and seeing the engine overheating for a while. It turned out the bottom radiator hose broke and all the coolant leaked out. Now it has an oil leak in the block and won't pass emissions. We sold it about 3 years ago at 120,000 miles.

Growing up my family burned through two of these! Both v10 and we'd haul the whole family cross country towing a 2 ton boat! I eventually learned to drive in our 2005 limited. When prom rolled around my friends and I (lovingly calling it Olga) opted for the Excursion instead of the limo! This beast brings me tons of nostalgia.

The 5.4 3 valve triton isn’t a very reliable V8. If don’t keep up on your oil change it will sludge up and in the head and black the cam phaser passage ways. And you need to replace the engine.

Like Doug, I knew a few families that had them and swore by them. One lady was on her SECOND one and whined about the gas mileage - like didn't you remember what the first one got?? I rode in one of these with both families and found them to be very comfortable. I remember back around 2005-2006 I was with one family when they gassed it up, and it took over $100 - this was shocking to me, who drove an Elantra at the time.

aka the TOW BEAST or KING of the ROAD!!! I bought my 2005 V10 Limited in 2006 and have never looked back. 11.5 MPG in the city and 17.0 MPG on the highway. 9.0 MPG with a 9000# trailer at 70 MPH. Hey but that's what you expected right?

This is small compared to a quad cab 4x4 dually. For all of you who don't know what that is.. It's a pick up that happens to be 1 meter larger in every dimension, 2 tons heavier and powered by a massive diesel motor straight out of a commercial vehicle

In 2012 the owner of a taxi service picked me up in one of these. I commented on using it to take just me to the airport, he said, "These things are all I have, if you see one for sale please call me. I can take an entire family and all their luggage to the airport and tow and extra trailer if needed that frees up another vehicle to make runs."

My favorite about these things is they just used Econoline tail lights. I know someone that has one with like 300,000 miles on it that they drive from Chicago to Mexico twice a year and they've owned it since new and the materials and styling don't really matter when there's literally nothing else that would fit someone like that's needs.

Hilariously this is actually an SUV version of the Ford truck which Hank Hill from King of the Hill drives! He drove a Ford Ranger for the first few years of the show, but then there was an episode where the Ranger was dying, but Hank refused to get rid of it. Then Bobby tricked Hank into driving 40 miles to a used-truck dealership... and as soon as Hank found out, he left and started to go home, but soon his Ranger got stuck on a railroad crossing, and got hit by a freight train! So he ended up going back to the dealership and buying the used Super Duty truck (which would have only been about two years old at the time of the episode)

My wife and I look at the current vehicles and while the Suburban and maybe a couple others make decent attempts - we are always bothered by the fact that nearly 98% of the vehicles today in this segment have very little room in the 3rd or have a chintzy cargo area - or some failing combination of the two. This sucker looks like one behemoth of a monstrosity. I feel like it epitomizes the statement “Hauling all 8 passengers and their luggage.” Not to mention the towing capacity added in. Heck!!! If you wanted to live dangerously you could ‘86 the spare and throw your mother-in-law back there with the luggage.
