The Mazda RX-8 is weird, cool, and special -- and you probably shouldn't buy one. Today I'm reviewing the Mazda RX-8, and I'm showing you all the quirks and features of the unusual RX-8. I'm also driving the RX-8, and I'm going to show you why you shouldn't consider one, even though it's cool.

Former Mazda salesperson here. I can confirm the service department absolutely HATED seeing this car lol, especially because they were frequently brought in due to owner negligence--you need to burn off the excess fuel in the rotary chamber or it can become flooded, meaning you have to stab the gas pedal and then turn the engine off. It has to warm up ideally for a good 10 minutes before you start driving it. Well, a lot of folks did not do either of those, and so seeing an RX-8 being brought in on a flatbed was fairly common lol. One guy had his brought in multiple times because his wife didn't understand she couldn't just turn it on, move it, and then turn it off so it flooded haha. Still though, i absolutely adore this car and had quite a great time driving it. The R3 was especially amazing!

The wheelbase is pretty long, I agree I don’t hate it tho And since it still handles well...I don’t see a real issue 👍

I had a used RX8 and never had any engine issues. You have to be religious about doing oil changes. I had one that did not have the extra oil dispenser so I would premix with Idemistu oil at fill up. Fun to drive and it was great revving up to 9k. Took corners well too

5:40 Sun visors holes are for viewing traffic lights. you can turn off the beeping of the buttons too. Absolutely everything in this car was carefully planned. btw, those cup holders aren't for cups lol. No real rx8 enthusiast would want to put drinks in the cup holders and risk spilling while pulling 1.3 G's in the corners. If you really need cup holders, there's two behind you in the center. Main reason rx8's get hate is because normal people would buy them and treat them like a piston engine car. This isn't a normal car.

5:40 The holes are to allow you to see traffic lights without being blinded. Also the buttons beeping can be easily turned off. An incredible amount of thought and planning went into this car. There's a reason rx8 owners love it.

I'm gonna start by saying the fuel economy is worse than the Chevy 5.7, I had a Ls1 Chevy Camaro before I got my 06' rx8 but so far this car is worth it it only has 1.3 liter displacement and it puts out massive amounts of power from the little engine stock. Now to understand the doors and the trunk you'll have to see things from a engineers view, Mazda sports cars are known for their low weight and great weight distribution due to the rotary engine and they had to compete with their flagship rx7 in handling as well as the changing world wanting more seats. If you've ever owned a trans am or Camaro then you know how ridiculously large and heavy those doors are, Mazda made the doors like that so that it can seat 4 people without dinging someones car up in a parking lot. The half- doors are also because of weight and weight distribution they weight less than a whole door and with a half-door they can keep the wheel base shorter and keeping the nimble feel in corners. I do agree on the cup holder situation but that's the only thing I agree on. People say these cars use oil well I think the only people who say that drive it like they stole it or have loads of miles on it at which any car will use alot. My rx8 hasn't used any and it's over 100k, I change the oil regularly and check it once a week. As far as the looks go, I get unprovoked compliments from nearly everyone. So far I'm impressed with this car, I've owned many sports cars and this one definitely is one of my most favorite

Terrible review buddy, these cars are amazing. If you give it the love and care it needs it will last you and will be very reliable. Too many racer boys who drive the car hard 24/7 and provide no proper maintenance are the reason for the negativity. Ensuring the car is heated up correctly and cooled correctly, Constant oil changes every 2km, 2 stroke oil in every tank and a red line a day are all needed constantly plus more smaller things. If you want to have a sports car, drive the shit out of it, and never maintain it. THIS IS NOT THE CAR FOR YOU.

I have an 2005 Infinti G35 coupe with over 300hp (standard) + 30HP+ in mods. I drove the Mazda - gutless, slow and only started to pull in very high revs. I also found it ugly, gas and oil hungry - I passed. The G35 sold very well. The RX-8 didn't and thus died as the G35 became the G37 before becoming the ugly non selling Q50 coupe now - ugh! If you want to drive mine sometime. I live right next to LAX. Find my email by googling HDnatureTV, my youtube channel.

Next time you borrow a car, make the owner clean the car, engine, and trunk. That would take 5 minutes for either you or the owner could do.

I owned a Black RX8 PZ, P is for Pro Drive and Z is for OZ, it had a prodrive exhaust a different spoiler and was lowered by 35mm also OZ alloys, I had the wheels sprayed black and a black window tint on the rest windows, used to get about 17 mpg around town and it was in the highest road fund licence bracket, had to sell it eventually ....

Had a 2005 - I loved it to the moon and back. The handling was telepathic, absolutely unreal, precise physical feedback--you had to get into Lotus, Porsche Cayman/911s etc to get better handling. The sound from the screaming rotary powerplant was addictive, and the interior was pretty practical for a small coupe and surprisingly premium for the price point. Mine had the banging Bose audio system too. The chassis could have handled 300 bhp, but given the low weight plus how fast the rotary revs the hp didn't seem that lacking. These don't get enough respect for how much they actually fit the textbook definition of 'sports car.' Real review begins at 20:30.

Former owner here, and a mechanic. My RX-8 was an adventure. And when I mean adventure it means blood sweat and tears. First bought it and found out this sporty looking car could be demolished by every v6 honda accord and camary. Ok bummer but it's a cool engine right? Well not exact. The issue of using crank case oil to lube the combustion chamber was horrid. Carbon fouling and cat issues made me block off the OMP and install a bypass that fed it clean 2 stroke oil which is designed to burn. That helped a ton. Then now let's solve the cooling issue. My stock radiator had a small nipple from the expansion tank that broke right off and dumped my coolant. One 600 dollar all aluminum radiator later that helped but did not solve it all. To follow the over heat issues I had upgrades my oil coolers with bigger coolers. Great? Rx-8 should be good now? Bahahhaahhaha no..... Not even close. The ignition coils on this engine are mounted to the combustion side of the engine on a METAL PLATE. Meaning the PLASTIC BODY coils would heat and cool so much they would fail very often. Like.... 15k miles often. And with 2 ignition coils per rotor it gave different symptoms depending on which one failed. And the coils are expensive. A typical tune up every 15k was around 6-8 hundred dollars. Did I mention fouling? Also exhaust temps exceed 2k degrees. Meaning your cat is absolutely dying every time you floor it. Also to drive a rotary you need to keep the rpms higher than snoop dogg. But that means you get smiles per gallon. Not miles per gallon My average was 9 mpg. Advertised as low 20s highway. The rear suspension was a problem. The rear springs relaxed and I would high side over autumn leaves. The vehicle is not light either. At 3100 lbs without a driver meant this engine pushing 180ish to the wheels struggled. My average 0-60 was around 6.8-7.2 seconds depending on the condition of my engines serviceable items. The manual trans ate up the synchros. Like second gear would crunch every time since she always had to deal with the abuse of the 1st gear. Also the throw out bearing was never designed for the high rpm for this engine so would squeak like mad and fail easily. Nothing makes you look more bammer than having to talk over your noisy tob at a mcdonald's drive through. Also, the fueling issue was insane. You notice the engine does not like regular gas. You NEED premium. The amount of blow by and heat this engine generates means low octane fuel would be a death sentence at high rpm. The rear calipers in my 8 had a problem in the way that the parking brake would wear so much that you would get a dragging rear brake issue and it took me forever to diag this. I replaced the caliper twice and was given one with the same problem which leads me to believe it is common. The rx-8 also isn't the best handling. 50-50 distribution did not mean handling. The rear seats were literally there for insurance cost purposes. Even my smallest friends couldn't fit back there. The engine... Ohh the engine.... She screams and she moans and she begs.... But she does not produce. My ex wife's fanny fangler had more torque than this car. My oral B tooth brush had more torque. My ninja blender had more horses. My nose during allergy season ran faster. With that... She made me a mechanic and gave me the passion for it. She is beautiful, but hard to manage like the pretty girl from class who is an only child. She was purpose built and if you deviate from her purpose she will make you regret her. She was fun and slow car fast. The 9200rpm redline was amazing and she begged you to touch it. I am now 7+ years as a mech and I now own a Hyundai Equus. I look back on her with fond memories but never to far are the nightmares she gave me. Avoid her at all costs, but if you have the money, the passion, the dedication... She will give you something you'll never forget
and in the darkness meme them
The "Super Unique" thing is actually mistranslation to French, usually it should say "super uniquement" which, you might have guessed by now, means "premium only". Sorry to burst your bubble :D

Please upvote so Doug may see this I think the super and unique stands for examples for premium fuels. We here in Belgium have Super 95 and Super 98 besides diesel. Unique must be a gasoline brand somewhere (it sounds french to me). Anyone who can confirm/clarify? :)

Doug, you should know that more people will buy a 4 seater than a 2 seater, even if no adult can sit in back. Sorry the rotary engine scares you. No worse in reliability and a lot cheaper to own than other similar cars like Porsche, Alfa, MBZ.

hey Doug! some hate mail for you from a non owner! I liked the car from day one for exact the reasons, why you do not like it! I think the long wheelbase makes look fast, the fenders make it look sporty! Your rant about the circles? Where you under the influence when you did this part? You can copy and past the whole rant to any other car! I never saw a square speedometer or light switch or radio control button or heater control button. Also, if you don't like a car, how objective you think is the outcome? And despite the owner stating, that he had no issues over the last 10 years, although only 75000 miles, you still deem it unreliable. But at the end, it looks like you still jumped over your own shadow and gave it an adequate rating. Besides this test, I like your other test for its down to earth, everyday relevant approach! thank you
