The original Oldsmobile Silhouette was weird, quirky, and bizarre. It was also the original luxury minivan, and today I'm reviewing the Silhouette to show you what it was like. I am also going to show you the quirks and features of the Silhouette, and I will show you how the Oldsmobile Silhouette drives.

If I were to list my favorite reviews, it would include the Vector W8 and this - the 1996 Oldsmobile Silhouette. It would be the only list, ever, that includes both the Vector W8 and the 1996 Oldsmobile Silhouette.

Also they had the Pontiac version of this 9n display as a "concept" vehicle at Disney World in Florida in the mid-80s. It was the most futuristic, neato thing that anyone ever saw at the time. People were having their pictures taken sitting in it.

I've seen those near 20 years old, rusted out and the doors nearly falling off but they were still running so the quality couldn't have been that bad. I think they put the bulletproof 3800 engine in those at one point too.

@Charlotte Bingham Are u a Billionaire? Wtf are u talking about, are you insane? You want people lose their money, is that what you want? Life is too short to be working for someone else's dream. Be a billionaire of your own. If you want to go big, stop thinking small. successful people are not people who never fail, but people who never quit. If you want to be a billionaire, then think like one, act like one, and live like one because there’s no other greater joy than having financial freedom and a life free of debts, All thanks to Mr carlos cause he made me who I am today through forex trade. He has helped me a lot with his trading strategies which helps me to earn $12,550 weekly with an initial investment of $1,000. I really appreciate it and can't help but let others know about it. it is so suitable anyone can trade from anywhere and anythime, reach out to Mr carlos on IG @carlos_1uptrades. his indeed a God Sent.

I learned to drive on a chevy lumina... I loved that van it was so cool and man that van had power and u may not believe this but i could do a burn out in it with front wheel drive and i had it up on 2. Wheels on its side doing a donut in a parking lot... And after i was done with that van my grandpa had to put a $1000.00. In repairs in 1996 money... Fun van and i miss it...

I saw a weird prototype for one of these as a kid at an auto-show in 1990... In this prototype version, the front portion detached from the rear portion, so you could drive the front portion around as a super compact 2-seat smart car... Then when it was time to pickup the kids, you can hitch back onto the rear portion and it became a van again...

Love 90s family cars. Did daddy Doug ever review a station wagon with the rear facing back seats? I used to love sitting there for family outings when I was a kid with my grandparents. Great memories.

My mom had a pontiac trans sport.... What a turd that car was, it had a problem with the windshield wiper linkage so my dad took it to the dealer to get it fixed. The van then had an electrical fire at the dealer totaling the van..

4:19 Rental car companies probably really liked that feature and advertised it for families that were flying to Disney for an example. So they didn’t have to bring all the car seats on the plane.
An2nio Transit Productions
@Bartonovich52 It’s less of a hassle. Plus comfortable compared to those plastic car seats with fabric I bet. Always hated those when I was little. Wish companies expanded on the idea of built in car seats.

I recently watched a compilation of Star Trek commercials; Leonard Nimoy was in the Oldsmobile Silhouette commercial. Honestly, I think it's fitting, since it looks like a Star Trek shuttlecraft. (Just like the Chevy Lumina minivan, btw.)

My sister had a BLK Chevy Lumina APV. It had a really bouncy but smooth ride and was pretty weird but got the family around without too many issues. I used to see them alot in the 90's and remember seeing new APVs and Pontiac Transports on rental lots at airports when we traveled. I even remember my dad renting a Cutlas Supreme and my great aunt having a Cutlas Sierra. Great uncle bought a new LSS just before his stroke and died. The LSS still had a NC paper tag and plastic on the seats! Best friend had a 97 Aurora. I miss Oldsmobile!!!

Did I miss it but I don’t think you mentioned me of it’s biggest innovations was the plastic panels like the Fiero. I actually had a deer hit me on the highway (side panel) and it bounced off with no damage and also no panel rust for us in the northern rust belt

Acceleration score 1 just like the 2018 Honda Odyssey. Boy the Oldsmobile Silhouette most must have been quick back in its day. The 18 through 21 Odyssey can go from 0 to 60 in 6.6 seconds. With those times it receives a Doug score of 1 just like the Odyssey So can you imagine a vehicle especially this silhouette hitting zero to 60 in under 7 Seconds. Or could I be wrong that any vehicle that goes from 0 to 60 in over 6.5 seconds receive a Doug score of 1. I never thought I'd see the day a 6-second vehicle would be considered Pokey. Back in the 80s early 90s a 0 to 60 time of 6-7 seconds woulld have been some of the quickest cars on the road. My 87 Mustang 5.0 GT which recorded a 0 to 60 in 6.6 seconds according to Road & Track. By this standard in 30 years your minivan will hit 60 in 2 seconds and this will be considered Pokey. Maybe in the future your average vehicle will do a quarter mile in seven seconds.

Was there any difference between the Oldsmobile Silhouette and the Chevy Lumina APV? I remember a family friend state that the leaf springs where fiberglass and that they had a tendency to shatter in the Canadian deep freeze that I am in.

My wife and I were given a free Lumina APV upon moving home from getting out of the navy. It was in mint condition too. As ugly as that thing was and a turning radius worse than a school bus, it helped us get on our feet and save for a house and a preowned Honda Odyssey touring. Night and day difference! The crazy thing was that because it was all aluminum body/doors and plastic panels, it had no deterioration or rust in the body whatsoever.

SUV's aren't "cool" either. They had that perception at one time compared to minivans, but not so much anymore. It's like saying Starbucks is 'cooler' than McDonald's at this late date, with more of the former than the latter nearly everywhere. So much for the over-priced, bitter coffee chain's "exclusivity".

About that child seat: The idea is awesome but I think it is not being implemented into modern cars because of european laws. I don't know about America but at least in Germany there are laws for child car seats and how old a kid has to be to use a certain seat etc. There are different sizes of seats for different age groups. This build in child seat would probably not fit German (and other European countries) laws.

Thanks for this review. It brings back so many memories. My parents had one when I was growing up and we had a lot of store and church trips in it. Ours had the same cloth seats and lack of power door but it was black and white just like that one. When I drove it as a teenager I remember it would really want to lurch when you first started to press the gas and then everything afterwards was a struggle. If you ever get a hold of a 91 Chevy Lumina or 94 Saturn SL2 my childhood will be complete.

GM made a lot fo ugly cars back then and did so for a couple decades. Not sure who was working there that had such horrible taste but I'm surprised they worked there for so long. On top of that a lot of GM vehicles from the mid 90s were throw aways and didn't last more then 2 decades... laughable...

You missed a bunch of important features. It was built on a fuselage. The body panels are made with recycled soda bottles. Having a fuselage made the van very rigid and the plastic body didn't dent or rust. Equipped with the 3800 v6 my Pontiac transport was able to tow 3500 lbs. It was also fast enough to get me in trouble with Johnny law. The best thing about removable seats is that it made the van lighter. Those 5 seats probably weight close to 300 lbs. This effectively raises the gvrw by lowering the curb weight. That's what Ford did when they used aluminum in their trucks. Lighter means more gas mileage, better handling and brakes and more speed.
